It is based on the understanding that a person will take a health-related action (e. g. starting a fitness routine) if he feels that a negative condition can be avoided, a positive expectation that by taking the recommended action, he will avoid a negative health condition or he believes that he can successfully take a recommended health action (Ryan, 2002).
