There are many training opportunities available to the people who work in the public service sector. For police officers, there is the IPLDP (Initial Police Learning and Development Programme) and deals with practical training such as self defense and first aid. There is also this probationer training available to police officers which is similar to the IPLDP but this training involves theory as well. There first aid training available for paramedics that teaches them how to deal with a patient who is unconscious or injured. This training deals with areas such as resuscitation and how to stop blood flowing from an open wound. In the first aid training, paramedics would work on a dummy and be assessed on how well they did.
Firefighters are told to go on fitness training to improve their strength and speed. This is important for them as they have to break into building and carry injured patients and the faster they can do this, the more chance the injured patient will survive. There is no training available to rubbish men because it isn’t a skilled job however there is training available to the person driving the truck. They are given training on the different routes to the destination they are required to go to collect the rubbish.
There is also vehicle training available for police officers, paramedics and firefighters as they would need to find the quickest route to the destination. It is also given to them as they are travelling at fast speeds when their sirens are on and they have to avoid accidents themselves. Career Progression Routes: Public service sector jobs (especially rubbish men) require no formal education although a pass in GCSE is required as well as A level. A person can get a job within the public service sector without going to university.
However there are possible progression routes for the people who are more passionate or what to learn more about the job. For a police officer there are possible courses available at university such as criminology. This is a course about crime, punishment and law and would benefit a police officer as they would need this knowledge to do their job. Before a police officer can get their jobs, they are required to pass a few physical and written exams to test their ability and knowledge. They also have to attend a few training courses which can last up to 20 weeks.
For fire-fighters can study the Fire and Rescue Service Management or Fire Safety & Risk Management course at university. There courses help deal with safety procedures and fire safety which is beneficial for a fire-fighter. Similarly to a police officer they are required to pass some exams and attend an academy to get use life as a fire-fighter. Paramedic science courses are available to paramedics which deal with theory similar to Biology as it deals with the human body. Part of this course also deals with health care so which helps paramedics to deal with injured patients. After university which is optional for they are required to undergo training which prepares them to become a fully qualified paramedic.
