About 35,000 nonsmokers die from coronary heart disease including heart attacks caused by exposure to smoke. Non-smokers who are exposed to second hand smoke increase their risk of developing cardiovascular disease by 30%-40%.

A recent study has shown that just 30 minutes of exposure to second hand smoke by a non-smoker can have a considerable effect on coronary blood flow. There is also evidence that second hand smoke is also linked with increased risk of stroke in both men and women. Second hand smoke is more detrimental to your health than any other air pollution. Although people might believe smoking low tar or low nicotine cigarettes decreases their risk, this is a misconception. Studies have show that there is little difference in the effects of “light” or “mild” cigarettes than in full flavored heavier cigarettes.

Even smoking as few as 1-4 cigarettes a day can double your risk for coronary heart disease.
