In this paper, I am going to be writing about 3 different types of diseases of the skin and their treatments. Also I will be including the signs and symptoms, causes of the diseases, and the medication side effects. The first topic will be about Measles, which is an example of a viral skin infection. Next topic will be about Malignant Melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer, and finally the last topic will be about Acne Rosacea. Measles is a viral disease that can kill you. This viral disease is caused by paramyxovirus, which is associated with the measles since it is a respiratory infection, and has the same symptoms.
In most people, the disease produces fever (temperature > 101 F [38. 3 C]), a generalized rash that last greater than three days, cough, runny nose (coryza), and red eyes (conjunctivitis). The complications of measles that result in most deaths include pneumonia and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) (Rockoff & Lehrer, 1996-2011, p. 1). The rash is appears after 3 to 5 days after the couch, runny nose and fever kicks in. For measles, there really is no treatment, but you can prevent this from happening by immunization. The only medicine you can take is something that will reduce the fever.
For instance you can take Tylenol, but you will have to calculate the dosage by the weight of the patient. Malignant melanoma is a skin cancer that develops in the pigment cells that are present in the skin. What causes this type of skin cancer to appear is from being out in the sun without any protection on. To determine if you have melanoma is to use the ABCD method: “Asymmetry: One half of the mole is different from the other half. Border irregularity: The spot has borders which are not smooth and regular but uneven or notched.
Color: The spot has several colors in an irregular pattern or is a very different color than the rest of your moles. Diameter: The spot is larger than the size of a pencil eraser” (Rockoff & Lehrer, 1996-2011, p. 2). A treatment for melanoma would be Yervoy injection. Yervoy (ipilimumab) is a monoclonal antibody used to treat late-stage, metastatic melanoma, a deadly skin cancer. Yervoy is thought to work by allowing the body’s immune system to recognize, target, and attack cells in these tumors (Stoppler, 2011, p. 1). Side effects include enterocolitis, decreased liver function, and dermatitis.
Yervoy is administered intravenously over 90 minutes every 3 weeks for a total of four doses (Stopper, 2011, p. 1). One precaution is that YERVOY (ipilimumab injection) can result in severe and fatal immune-mediated reactions due to T-cell activation and proliferation (Stopper, 2011, p. 4). Acne Rosacea is a type of a sebaceous gland disorder that I chose. Rosacea is a very common red, acne-like benign skin condition that affects many people worldwide (Alai, 1996-2011, p. 1). The main symptoms of rosacea include red or pink patches, visible tiny broken blood vessels, small red bumps, red cysts, and pink or irritated eyes (Alai, 1996-2011, p.1).
Rosacea characteristically involves the central region of the face, causing persistent redness or transient flushing over the areas of the face and nose that normally blush — mainly the forehead, the chin, and the lower half of the nose (Alai, 1996-2011, p. 1). Majority of people may not even know they have rosacea, or that it can be diagnosed and treated. Topical antibiotic medication such as metronidazole applied one to two times a day after cleansing may significantly improve rosacea (Alai, 1996-2011, p. 5). While taking this drug you might experience blistering, swelling, or itching on the skin.
If you notice any other kind of symptoms for instance a tingling feeling on your hands, notify the doctor as soon as possible. In this short paper, I have learned about 3 completely different types of diseases and their treatments. Measles is a viral disease that can actually kill you. In order to prevent from getting this disease, you may want to get immunized. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can either be treated from surgery or from a drug called Yervoy. You can use the “ABCD” method that I have explained about in order to notice if the mole is different.
And finally, Rosacea is red spots that make you look like you are blushed. This is found around your chin, forehead, and nose.
