Obesity Scenario

The last eating disorder is Obesity, which is when one is excessively overweight, about 20 percent overweight. Consuming more calories, than expanding causes this. Seven factors can lead towards obesity and these are social factors, endocrine and metabolic factors, psychological factor, genetic factor, developmental factors, physical activity, and brain damage. These factors are what determine obesity.

Obesity is six more times more present then in lower middle class woman, then upper class. This disorder is far more common among lower class than upper class; this is significant by age six. This is not good for the lower class because they may lack health insurance or have sufficient funds to seek treatment.

Recently many doctors believe that heredity is a huge part in obesity rather than over eating. It is though that their bodies are programmed to make more efficient use of food they eat, so they do not burn as many calories as other people do for the same amount of energy they use. Therefore what is leftover is stored lipids. (Strada, 2001) The treatment for obesity is simple, weight reduction.

This is not an easy task, as that most obese patient has never tried dieting. The process is slow one, aiming at gradual weight loss than a sudden and dramatic shedding of excess pounds. One should lose only two pounds per week. A good diet will convince the patient to eat less and control the urge to overeat. (Fassino, 2003) In order to do these strict guidelines should be followed. The diet should have variety of food to chose from, and exercise. The diet should have less then the person’s requirements. The exercise should be simple like jogging or walking so that the patient can get use to their new lifestyle. (Bulik, 2004)

Eating disorders are serious illnesses that cause damage to the body or death. Anorexia, Bulimia, Obesity, are major problems in society today. Media magazines and celebrities all portray the perfect image that is slim, beautiful, and happy. When a person is diagnosed with an eating disorder it is hard for them to cope due to constant image that slim is beautiful, slim is successful.

Since most experts agree that eating disorders arise from psychological problems caused by cultural forces and social pressures over which victims have no control. On the other hand one can not change our culture and society in order to deal with one group of people’s problems. And lastly, anxiety related to feelings of inadequacy and lack of control over life events is considered to be a significant nursing diagnosis for clients with eating disorders. Some meaningful nursing interventions may include encouraging verbalization of fear and anxiety and assisting the client to identify specific stressors and ways to cope with them.

Encouraging the significant others to project a caring, concerned attitude towards the client. Educate the client in various relaxation techniques, such as guided imagery, meditation methods, or listening to music to help reduce anxiety level. And finally, provide appropriate community resources for assistance and support.

With all these in mind, it can be concluded that eating disorders, if left untreated, can be life threatening. Treatment does not occur overnight. It is therefore essential to treat these disorders in individualized manner and a combination of psychotherapeutic strategies and medications is highly recommended. Life long recovery and guidance are important keys for successful treatment.
