Should medical marijuana be made legal? There are many people who overlook the beneficial effects of marijuana. Society today would say that it is just a gateway drug that is only abused, but in reality marijuana is just misunderstood. There are many good uses that we can gain from this natural plant. Marijuana could be beneficial to the body, if used properly. There are countless legal proscription drugs and non-proscription drugs that are by far more dangerous than marijuana. Lastly, America is wasting too much money on outlawing marijuana.
Therefore under many circumstances medicinal marijuana should be made legal in all of the United States (U. S. ) for medical purposes. Medicinal marijuana should be legalized in America because of its many health benefits. It is proven that medicinal marijuana can improve the effects of medical conditions such as cancer and psychiatric disorders. It is also proven that marijuana can even improve the horrible effects of AIDS. For example, The Institute of Medicine, (IOM), concluded that the THC in marijuana can be effective for pain relief, and appetite stimulation in AIDS patients.
Also in the article marijuana can control chemotherapy related nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. Marijuana can improve moods and reduce anxiety, so therefore it acts as a sedative for people with psychiatric disorders. The THC in marijuana is highly effective and in demand in the medical field. Cigarettes are one of the many substances that are legal, but still bad for users the side effects of cigarettes far worse than marijuana. Cigarettes contain nicotine; nicotine may harden the arteries and may be responsible for much of the heart disease caused by tobacco.
In the article 35 isn’t smoking marijuana worse for you than smoking cigarettes it said “New research has found that it may also cause a lot of the cancer in tobacco smokers and people who live or work where tobacco is smoked. This is because it breaks down into a cancer causing chemical called `N Nitrosamine’ when it is burned. ” There are no cases of lung cancer resulting from marijuana use that has been documented according to the article. Unlike cigarettes marijuana has beneficial properties, marijuana makes you relax which will relieve stress, improve health, and wellness.
Speaking from personal experience, I have a fear of commercial prescription drugs. I believe they only solve one problem to give you even more minor problems. If companies are allowed to put something like this on the market why is it a bad idea to offer medical marijuana which solves all problems which is attended for without the negative side effects? This also applies to alcohol, which can be considered as a poison that is legal to drink as a leisurely pastime. With the potential of medical marijuana being such a positive thing, the U.
S. can make a lot of money by legalizing medical marijuana. If we just legalize it we can save a lot of money by stop trying to outlaw it. We can relate this situation with past history when the U. S. banned alcohol. According to statistics recently released by the U. S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics in the article Pot Prisoners Cost Americans $1 Billion a Year “American taxpayers are now spending more than a billion dollars per year to incarcerate its citizens for pot. 12.
7%o f state inmates and 12. 4% of federal inmates incarcerated for drug violations are serving time for marijuana offenses. Combining these percentages with separate U. S. Department of Justice statistics on the total number of state and federal drug prisoners suggests that there are now about 33,655 state inmates and 10,785 federal inmates behind bars for marijuana offenses. The U. S. Department of Justice prison expenditure data reveals that taxpayers are spending more than $1 billion annually to imprison pot offenders.
This is not counting the amount of Americans that are arrested each year for violating marijuana laws for possession which also costing taxpayers another $8 billion dollars. ” The amount of money alcohol and tobacco generate together that’s the only reason why the U. S. haven’t banned it. Tobacco and alcohol sales generate over $17 billion in federal tax revenue. With a yield of $16-$20 in taxes marijuana has a market of $40 billion. However, many people may restitute that the legalization of marijuana would have more of a negative affect on the U.
S. due to its label as being a “drug”, but in this argument its beneficial affects may have others think otherwise. With all known medical benefits that we already know about marijuana the good outweighs the bad by far. Marijuana could be beneficial to the body, it also poses a lesser threat than proscription and non-proscription drugs, and it will bring a vast amount of money to the U. S. in sales. Sooner or later the U. S. will see the positive possibilities that marijuana can bring to the U. S.
