“Most of the time when someone with cancer is told they have cancer in the bones, the doctor is talking about a cancer that has spread to the bones from somewhere else. This is called metastatic cancer”. On March 3rd, 1993 Jimmy opened his heart to everyone from a narrative perspective. He delivered a motivating and inspirational speech exemplifying his life as a coach and sports broadcaster. Jimmy’s ten minute speech full of compassion, emotion, and a bit of humor opened the minds of his audience creating a lifelong message of hope.

Through techniques such as pathos, humor, and utilizing poignant tone; Jimmy is able to deliver an uplifting speech, epitomizing his strong presence he has dedicated to the history of sports. He foreshadows his utilization of pathos by exemplifying himself not as a basketball coach but as, an emotional and passionate man. This sentence exacerbates the fact that Jimmy was a kind hearted man who was not only looking to win the game or be the star of the broadcast but to change the lives of his players and the fans. Jimmy continues his expenditure of pathos when he exclaims, “We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. He thought that all he had to do was replace Green Bay Packers with Rutgers and he would be all set. In attempt to repeat Lombardi Valvano stated, “I go to knock the doors open just like Lombardi. Boom!

They don’t open. I almost broke my arm Now I was down, the players were looking let’s go,” I said. “Gentlemen, we’ll be successful this year if you can focus on three things, and three things only. Your family, your religion and the Green Bay Packers” (Jim Valvano Quotes). Although only a few audience members laughed the story still provided the audience with information of instances that shaped him to be who he is today. Humor became an important aspect in his speech as it kept the audience engaged and wanting to hear the next statement he had to say.
