Heart Disease

In our society today many people are considerably overweight. To be exact two out of every three Americans are overweight one third of which are considered obese. People who are overweight can have multiple problems and diseases in the long run due to being overweight. One of those diseases is heart disease. A couple reasons why people are so overweight are lack of exercise, poor diet, and unfortunately also heredity. Heredity is major factor when dealing with heart disease or any disease in general. Since genes are a factor into people’s health; people should definitely know all chronic disease in their family.

In my family heart disease is a major issue unfortunately. Many of my family members suffer or suffered from heart problems. Since my family has a history of heart problems I have to be especially sure of what I do to help prevent myself from suffering from heart disease. Heart disease is a general description of heart problems and they’re numerous types of problems. I’m going to be specifically focusing on heart failure. Every single year heart failure is one of the leading causes of deaths in this country. Heart failure is when the heart is not able to pump enough blood to the rest of the body (1). It is a chronic long term condition.

People may have onset experiences known as acute heart failures. Acute heart failure is different then congestive heart failure because congestive heart failure is when the vital organs do not receive blood flow. Unfortunately heart failure is often undiagnosed due to a lack of a universally agreed definition and challenges in definitive diagnosis. Some symptoms of heart failure are irregular heartbeat, swelling of the ankles and feet, and sudden weight gain from fluid retention. About 2% of adults in America suffer from heart failure, and people who are 65 and older at a 6-10% risk for heart failure (2).

When you are diagnosed with heart failure it usually gets worsens over time. There are plenty of risk factors and causes for heart failure. Some risk factors may include hypertension, diabetes, and heart attack (3). These problems are not just developed due to poor genes. Many people develop these problems due to lack of exercise and very poor diets. People don’t understand that eating unhealthy foods doesn’t only have a short term impact of being fat but more importantly leads to problems that eventually will kill you.

In this country we don’t eat right and a direct result of that is we are the fattest country in the world. A direct result of being the fattest country in the world is that the leading cause of death is heart disease. This isn’t a coincidence that heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. People need to learn to eat healthier and also exercise. People need to start cooking at home rather then going out and getting fast food which is terrible for you. People need to also exercise at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Having a history of heart problems really took its toll.

My dad was in complete denial of what had happened. It was about six months after and my dad just wasn’t feeling right. He was nauseous, dizzy and lost balance and coordination. He was admitted into the hospital for 4 nights and was puking every night. Finally he went home after 4 days but it didn’t help him. He still couldn’t function or move he had lost all coordination. He was forced to stay in bed for the next seven weeks. This was all due to my uncle dying due to a rare case of heart failure (WPW). My uncle at the time was only 36 when he died.

There are a couple things that I need to do to prevent myself from getting heart problems. I need to make sure I’m never overweight; to the point where my heart having to work harder then it should. I will have to consistently be exercising and eating healthy for the rest of my life. One thing I would like to do in the future is cut down on cheese. Although cheese is high in protein it has a big down side. Cheese tends to form as a mold in your coronary arteries. The more it builds up the more likely I am at risk for a heart attack.

Also when I am older I will go to a cardiologist at least annually to make sure every thing is running well. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. This is do to poor diet, lack of exercise and heredity. If people aren’t exercising and aren’t eating healthy they put themselves at a very high risk for heart problems in the long run. People who have a family history of this should be doing even more to prevent themselves from getting these problems that will eventual lead to your death. Unfortunately the situation of our country being so overweight isn’t going to get any better anytime soon.

With the economy the way it is people need to eat cheaper foods. Cheaper foods tend to be leaning towards fast foods. We all know eating fast food will most likely not make you skinnier. Not that there aren’t healthy choices provided in these fast food places, but people don’t make these choices to eat healthier. The problem with America being overweight is only getting worst. Unfortunately, people whom are already overweight are having overweight children due to genetics and in the long run overweight people have increased risk for heart problems.
