Health is Wealth

Health issues had been one of the main concerns of people in various countries in the world. Given that various diseases and disabilities are often possible to be acquired by any person, most government provides health benefits to compensate the needs of their citizens during such occurrences. With these kinds of benefits, most countries use various methods to justify the accuracy of the benefits provided to every individual. One of the most effective measures utilized is the Disability Adjusted Life years.

The concept of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY) was generated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the World Bank. The concept of DALY is utilized in order to create measuring system of the load of diseases which affects individuals. In addition, the study of the total number of healthy lives which had been lost due to all types of causes of deaths and disabilities during a span of time is reflected within the analytical research. The disabilities included are physical and mental health issues.

One of the main purposes of DALY is “(i) in setting health service priorities; (ii) in identifying disadvantaged groups and targeting of health interventions; and (iii) in providing a comparable measure of output for interventions, program and sector evaluation and planning” (McKenzie, Pinger, & Kotecki, p. 74, 2005). Due to the various issues within the health of the citizens of various countries, the usage of the DALY is important in order to calculate and measure the proper amounts of benefit a person could have in his or her life time.

The systems of DALY is stated to be used by the WHO in a extensive manner due to the belief that it is the most appropriate system to present the equality regarding issues in health. Most often than not, DALY is stated to not have a equal measurement depending on the sickness of the person. However, The WHO have used the Daly to “asses the disease burden associated with various types of health problems caused by various circumstances” (World Health Organization, p. 45, 2004). Through the use of DALY, not only the measurement of the accurate health compensation is done but also the usual health problems are investigated.

The DALY presents its researchers what types of diseases and health problems are experienced by most of the individuals being analyzed. Through these studies, the community (small scope) or the state (large scope) could easily provide health compensation for the diseases which were acquired through comprehensive studies. Therefore, the states are more prepared to the tendencies of their citizens having diseases or health problems. In another point of view, through the knowledge that certain diseases are experienced by various individuals in the state.

It is also possible that through the DALY, the expected cases of health problems could be further prevented through additional studies in mitigation. In the course of studying various diseases and health problems that occur, the challenges to create solutions could also be on the same path if the government has the proper funding as well as appropriate concern with regards to the issues of health. In conclusion, the DALY is one of the most effective ways to measure the appropriate benefits that individuals must have. Although such type of measurement is fully agreed by most analysts due to the said inequality of the computations and rates.

However, the World Bank as well as the World Health Organization is fully supporting the usage of the DALY in various countries due to their belief of its accuracy. Some benefits of the DALY is the information of the various types of diseases and health concerns that are faced by various individuals. In addition, the studies also provide the chance for nations to create mitigation schemes to solve health problems in their states.
