Assignment overview
In this assignment you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of health and safety in social care settings. You will use case studies to show your awareness of the legislative framework, identify hazards and assess levels of risk. You will demonstrate your awareness of the use of care or support plans and risk assessment in social care. You will investigate topical issues, examine incidents and make assessments of the appropriateness of the actions taken and you will prepare materials to enhance the safety awareness of others.
Learners will benefit from undertaking practical courses relating to moving and handling, food safety and first aid.

Task A – Plan
You are planning an outing with a group of individuals. Some of the individuals need assistance with using the toilet, eating and drinking, and with their medication.
Prepare a plan for all social care workers and helpers to follow. Your plan should include the following information.
Ai A description of four different examples of accidents and/or sudden illnesses that might occur.
Aii An outline of the procedure to follow if an accident or sudden illness should occur.
AiiiA list of the principles to be followed for safe moving and handling.
Aiv An explanation of why it is important to follow the care plan and communicate with each individual when assisting and moving.
Av An outline of staff responsibilities for medication in a social care setting.
Avi A brief description of the agreed procedures for:

the medication needed for the outing.
Avii An explanation of why the social care workers accompanying the individuals on the outing should have specialist training before each of the following:

Case study one
Winston is a social care worker supporting young people with learning disabilities in the community. One evening, he visits an individual to find that a pipe has burst in their roof. Water is running down the light fitting and onto the bathroom floor.

Case study two
Ellie is 42 and has Down’s syndrome. She lives at home with her mum and dad. Ellie attends a group three times a week where she meets her friends. There is a bus that goes directly to the community centre and Ellie really wants to go on the bus, on her own. Her mum insists on taking and collecting her in the car and Ellie is now refusing to go. This situation is making them all very unhappy.
