Cancer and Cosmetics

Breast cancer has been one of the most destructive types of cancer within the past ten years. Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the tissues of the breasts. The two types of breast cancer are ductal and lobular carcinoma. The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma. Ductal carcinoma is a tumor that begins in the cells that line the ducts of the breasts. Lobular carcinoma starts in the lobules, which is the part of the breast that produces milk. Estrogen is the main sex hormone in women. The more estrogen that a woman is exposed to, the higher risk she has of developing breast cancer.

Estrogen is the main part of the human reproductive system. The amount of estrogen in the body can increase because of many reasons. One reason why the amount of estrogen may increase is being overweight. Being overweight can cause estrogen to increase because some of the estrogen is made or stored in fat. Being overweight during menopause can increase a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer by almost 50% because the ovaries can no longer make estrogen. Unfortunately, there are many different reasons why people develop breast cancer. There have been studies within the past few years about whether or not cosmetics cause cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death at this time. It makes a lot of sense that products, such as deodorant and antiperspirants, are main causes because nobody thinks those products would be harmful to the body, so they continue to use them on a daily basis. Many cases of breast cancer are found close to the armpit, which is where deodorant is often applied. In the article, “Dangerous Chemicals in Deodorant & Antiperspirants: A Detailed Review of the Chemicals”, Fields talks about a study between cancer and cosmetics. Deodorants and soaps probably isn’t something that would come to mind when we hear “breast cancer”.

In this article, the author mentions different products that are being falsely advertised. It’s believed by some that companies are more concerned about their profit instead of what should be putting first, the customers. Not many people have heard about the harmful ingredients that the buyers are continuing touse, but hopefully it will become known before it affects more people. I came across the quote, “Published in 2003 in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, interviewed 437 women with breast cancer about their past and present use of deodorants.

The study reported that women who applied deodorant at least twice a week and shaved their armpits at least three times a week developed breast cancer almost 15 years younger than women who did neither. ” This is a very concerning quote that stood out. Fifteen years is a huge difference when it comes to having cancer and the years it may take away from a human’s life. I was shocked to see that there was this much of a difference between people that use cosmetics, such as deodorant, and those that do not. The article, “Baseline of Health Foundation Article: Cancer-Causing Deoderant?

” The article talks about how long people have been using deodorants and shaving since puberty. We might have to start worrying about the outcome of good hygiene, which is somewhat of a scary thought. There has been a new study that took place in England that some of the ingredients that are used in deodorants, cosmetics, and even some foods are being linked to research of breast cancer. Scientists tested many samples of tissue from forty women in England. The studies took place from 2005 to 2008. All the women that were tested were being treated for breast cancer during that time.

There was at least one paraben, which is an ingredient found in deodorants, cosmetics, and some food, in 99 percent of the samples. Parabens are also found in some products such as shampoos, shaving creams, toothpastes, suntan lotions and more. This article also mentions to stay away from some processed foods such as sausages because parabens are found in some processed meats as well. I believe this is a valid source because it was a study by scientists over a time span of a few years. This is one of many studies that show how products that we use regularly are related to breast cancer.

The writer shows great research and evidence to lead me to believe that products really do lead to breast cancer. There have also been many studies about the relation between aluminum and breast cancer. Many antiperspirants contain aluminum. In 2008, there was a study published. Researchers tested samples from twenty patients that currently had breast cancer and were undergoing treatment during that time. The women tested had a large amount of aluminum in the breast tissue. The tissue closest to the underarm, which is where deodorantuse, but hopefully it will become known before it affects more people.

Aluminum is actually one fourth of the volume of an antiperspirant. Aluminum obviously isn’t usually found in the body. This study was great evidence that some antiperspirants and deodorants can cause cancer. Aluminum had been absorbing into the patient’s skin for a long period of time. There are many ways in which we can keep ourselves safe from the chemical.

One option to keep ourselves safe is to look for products that are labeled paraben-free. Most paraben-free products are natural. Another option is to put a distilled water system in your house. A distiller will remove all parabens from drinking and bath water. Basically, the less we put on our bodies, the better. Hopefully manufactures will eventually start making products without parabens, but they will have to decide that safety should come before company profits. There are also many preventions to breast cancer. Exercising builds the immune system; therefore, it can help to block cancer.

Exercise is known to lower the blood levels of both men and women’s sex hormones. Eating healthy can help prevent cancer as well. People will still have a small risk of breast cancer even if they do what they can to prevent it. One question that comes to mind, will people start putting their health before their hygiene? I’m beginning to think that people might ignore the fact that there are so many unhealthy things that lead to cancer. I mean, cigarettes are bad for people, yet millions of people still continue to use them before of an addicting chemical and how it makes them feel.

I believe that most people will continue to use cosmetics with parabens in them because many people are obsessed with good hygiene now-a-days. I believe that people should at least know the effects that some cosmetics have. I truly hope that companies will start to care more about customer’s health, rather than the company making a profit. I also want to see the topic addressed on the news so that people will know about the harmful effects of some cosmetics before it’s too late. Works Cited 1) Hiyaguha Cohen.
