A career in nursing has for many years been the goal that I pursued with all enthusiasm and effort that I have ever put in a career-related endeavor. At the point where I am now, I am confident that a nursing program at Texas Wesleyan University is the best way to realize this ambition in a way that will add most value to my professional development and potential to contribute to community development. Realizing all the difficulties that will accompany me in case I am admitted to the program, I nevertheless want to follow this path and make the most of my nursing education.
My career in nursing began with the position of a brand new nurse in ICU. Today, years after this date, I still find that to be the job I am best at. My very first assignment was one at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock in the surgical intensive care unit where I was exposed to all the challenges of nursing life in a highly intense, fast-paced environment where I had to deal with a wide variety of cases including post operative open heart patients and other major vascular surgical patients, neurosurgical patients, trauma patients, and other critically ill cases.
While coping with such a wide array of situations was a clear challenge to someone new to the profession, it was a good school that taught me to make independent decisions, to think on my feet and fostered my dedication to the occupation that became a critical aspect of my life. Three years later, I moved into the position of a traveling nurse, remaining at ICU. The next two years were equally exciting as I moved between the surgical ICU, medical ICU, and cardiovascular ICU at University Medical Center.
This experience has prepared me quite well for my current role at Lubbock Heart Hospital patients where I take care of mostly open heart post op patients. The relatively small size of the hospital allows me to take on diverse assignments exposing me to a number of different areas such as the OR and recovery, which has proved a great benefit for my professional growth. In addition, my interactions with anesthesiologists and surgeons helped me realize my deep interest in anesthesiology as a profession and confirmed my desire to work as an anesthetist.
In my belief, the skills that an anesthetist is required to have are a good match for my inborn abilities, and the special relationship they can have with the patient has been fascinating to me. The personal experience of working with a highly skilled anesthetist at ICU had a great influence on my ambition as this person with his kindness and gentleness with the patients and dedication to their comfort is one of the best examples I have seen in medical profession.
Observing his behavior with patients, I dreamed of a day when I can in a similar fashion alleviate fears and dispel worries, forming a solid relationship with them. I am also determined to gain similarly perfect skills in the operating room. With this goal in mind, I am firmly convinced that the program offered at Texas Wesleyan University is the best way to get to where I want to be. From very early days in my career, I have focused on this program due to its high academic quality, rigorous selection process and resulting quality of incoming class and career opportunities it opens.
I am fully aware that this is not going to be an easy time if I get admitted, but I have the full commitment to become a successful student and translate knowledge earned at Texas Wesleyan into an equally successful career. My conviction that this is the best place where I can realize my goals is confirmed by the fact that this is my third attempt to get into the program, and I feel that the value of the opportunity justifies pursuing it further on. I hope, however, that this attempt will become a success, and my strong desire to take advantage of this great opportunity will come true.
Now that the program offers students the option of living in Lubbock, TX and attending the school via satellite at Texas Tech University, it is an even better match to my aspirations. After several years of living here, I have established quite a few friendly ties in the area and am fully committed to serving this community. Therefore, the flexibility now embedded in Texas Wesleyan’s academic offering is another factor that attracts me in this program.
In addition, having a few good friends among the school’s current students and alums who have successfully graduated and entered the workforce, I have spoken a lot to them about their experiences, which confirmed my interest and commitment to study there. Besides, I know now that I will have some contacts from which I could build my network of connections in the school and alumni community. Looking back on my career path, I feel that it has been full of diverse and highly challenging experiences that shaped me into a dedicated professional with clear-cut professional goals and passion to achieve them.
I realize that the admission process to Texas Wesleyan University is highly competitive; with this said, I hope the admission committee will appreciate my commitment and help me move forward armed with first-class medical knowledge and highly regarded qualification. I believe that this would be the start of a long journey of devoted service to the community grounded in enthusiasm, hard work and care for individual health and happiness.
