There were eleven such antiepileptic drugs found by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration that posed a risk to the people who consumed these medicines in a way that it augmented the risk of suicidal behavior in the people. Although this has been identified previously as well but now the manufactures of these medicines are being forced to specify the warning signs on their labels and same goes with the doctors who prescribe such medicines as it is even their duty to warn the patients about their risks before they actually take the medicine.
These drugs mostly contain carbamazepine, levetiracetam, topiramate and zonisamide, etc and FBA is taking steps to make the patients alert regarding the risk they are taking when consuming these medicines. Moreover, research conducted by FBA revealed that when the patients are being prescribed to take antidepressants, they actually worsen depression and the thought of suicide and the research also revealed that there is twice the risk prevailing in the patients taking these medicines than the other patients.
In order to prevent this, monitoring is advised and dosage adjustments should be made. (Pavlovich-Danis, 2009). Other than this, the dosage that is being suggested to the patient should be as less as required to cure the illness. It is also the duty of the patients themselves to find out the good and the bad effects of the medicine before they actually have it and they should know the side effects a particular medicine would leave on them. This is important especially in this case because depression and the thought of suicide is something that is not very good for the patient himself and also for the society.
Therefore, these medicines should be avoided in most of the cases. Other than this, even if the patient has to have these, the dosage antiepileptic drugs should be made limited. (Ochoa, 2008). Conclusion The impact of antiepileptic drugs on nursing is somewhat drastic and the reason behind this is that although prescribing these medicines would cure the disease of the patient to an extent but the usage of the antiepileptic drugs affect the psychological behavior of the patients.
The word psychology basically means the study of the mind and it is actually related to the way the humans behave to certain things and to explain this further I would say that the way the humans respond to something, the way they perceive things and the way they respond to it, all of these determine the psychology of a human and psychological knowledge is applied to the human activities and is actually linked with the daily affairs and the way they are to be managed.
The usage of these antiepileptic drugs makes a patient become a victim of anxiety, it makes him hostile towards things and the patient may become panicky very often. Other than this, the patient may become restless or become a victim of insomnia. This would therefore, make it difficult for the nurses to handle the patients and extra care have to be taken for such patients so that they might not commit suicide. (Shi, 2006).
