Should teenagers use cosmetic surgery to enhance their body image?

Plastic surgery holds a critical place in cultures all over the world, tribes back then would disc their lips, stretch their earlobes, bind their feet, file their teeth, and tattoo and scare their skin. Today we have a wide range of surgical procedures, plastic surgery has not always readily available. It is said that the first recorded account of reconstructive plastic surgery on the living was found in ancient Indian Sanskrit texts. Teens started to seek plastic surgery for many reasons.

Most teens seek plastic surgery to improve their appearance or to increase self-esteem, some because young people can be cruel. Cruel comments many time about their image make teenagers to take surgical action. Although teenagers may be taking a huge risk to make their self image appear better, according to the ASPS they advises parents to evaluate the teenager’s physical and emotional maturity and believes that individual cases merit careful evaluation under the guidance of a plastic surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

When the teenager is mature the teenager must be able to tolerate the discomfort and temporary disfigurement of a surgical procedure. The ASPS also state that plastic surgery is not recommended for teens who are prone to mood swings or erratic behavior, who are abusing drugs and/or alcohol, or who are being treated for clinical depression or other mental illness. In 2012 there was no national uniform laws to prevent under-18s from going under the knife for aesthetic purposes, very few places were banding plastic surgery for minors.

More that 236,000 cosmetic procedures were preformed on patients between 13 and 19, 75,000 surgical procedures such as nose reshaping, breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks took place that year. Now in todays days plastic surgery has grown very popular among the youth. Our Bodies Ourselves said that research indicates that breast augmentation patients are 4 times as likely to commit suicide compared to other plastic surgery patients. There was also studies that were preformed that say that body-image satisfaction made the person feel better about themselves and about their physical appearance.

Parents and teens have to decide carefully to see what suites them best. Parents and teens must be informed about about performing cosmetic surgery on the bodies that have not reached maturation, they also need to be aware of the operative complications and long-term physical effects. It is said that the FDA will have more restrictions on minors getting cosmetic surgery, they have a greater concern and hop to reach teenagers so they can fully comprehend the risks they could be facing when going under the knife.

Teens have been allowed to undergo cosmetic surgery, but now they are seeking to many other types of cosmetic surgery. The number of teenagers seeking for cosmetic surgery is increasing especially in the developed countries. The question is “Should teenagers use cosmetic surgery to enhance their body image? ” I believe that teenagers should not depend on cosmetic surgery in order to enhance their body image. It is said by many of the articles that I have read that when deciding on cosmetic surgery it is to improve and transform their appearance, either because they get judged on their physical appearance.

Characteristics that may be concerning a teenager maybe the simple problem of a misshapen nose, protruding ears, overly large breasts, or even acne and scarring. Yes there self-esteem and confidence maybe improved when having cosmetic surgery, but I strongly believe those self-esteem problems could be approached in a different matter. Children as you as 10 are going to get some kind of surgical procedure, Dr. Michael Niccole gave his daughter now 22 breast implants when she was 18.

Beauty experts are not on board with this type of surger, many agree on a major factor they consider the fact that patients are still growing both physically and emotionally. “Teen Health. ” Teens and Plastic Surgery.
