When you were younger, has anyone asked you what you wanted to be when you got older? Whether it was a teacher, doctor, lawyer, police officer, engineer or even a firefighter, we all have a dream or desire to be and to do great when we get older. Edward E. Rosenbaum once said: “Doctors are great – as long as you don’t need them. ” This quote is not necessarily true; A human being will always need some type of doctor in their life regardless of if they live a healthy lifestyle or not.
There are many types of Doctors. Doctors from Physicians to Surgeons are all over the world and there are more and more students and adults wanting to become doctors. Why would one individual want to become a doctor? Maybe to save peoples lives, maybe for the money or maybe they want to become a doctor to have a feeling as if they’re over someone because of their degree. But do you think that doctors are above you as far as their degree? Ashley Carter, an on call, on travel nurse practitioner stated that.
“Doctors are only above us because of their degree, but in my opinion I don’t think doctors should make as much money as they do because we do more than they do. We’re their assistants and everything but we do more work when it’s all said at done. We prepare everything for them for instance, for someone who’s receiving a specific surgery; we have to get everything ready. Their room, the equipment is all prepared by us and even after the surgery we clean up everything.
We’re still caring for the patients because that’s what our job is but at the same time the doctor should be there as well because they get paid more than we do and it’s their patient. ” Salary. com describes a Surgeons job description as an individual who performs surgery to prevent and correct injuries, deformities, and diseases or improve patient function, appearance or quality of life. Reviews patient history and confirms need for surgery. Determines which instruments and method of surgery will be most successful in achieving desired outcome.
Becoming a surgeon requires a lot. It’s not like a career that only requires a two year degree. To become a surgeon, you have to have a master’s. You have to have degree in medicine from an accredited school and you have to be licensed to practice. You also have to attend medical school for four years and then do a one year residency which is just a stage of graduate medical training. A residency may follow the internship year or include the internship year as the first year of residency.
The residency can also be followed by a fellowship, during which the physician is trained in a specialty or a sub-specialty. Successful completion of residency training is a requirement to practice medicine in many jurisdictions. In some states of the United States, physicians may usually obtain a general medical license to practice medicine without supervision after completing one year of internship in the state of their license. Many residents have medical licenses and do legally practice medicine without supervision in settings such as urgent care centers and rural hospitals.
However, in most residency-related settings, residents are supervised by attending physicians who must approve of their decision-making. Physicians who practice in the primary care specialties of general internal medicine, family practice, and pediatrics earn substantially less than physicians in non-primary care specialties. If one controls for the one to two years of additional residency training required in non-primary relative to primary care specialties, there are still substantial rates of return to specialization.
In 1998, for example, the estimated rates of return to specializing in radiology, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, and anesthesiology relative to entering family practice, exceeded 25 percent. These rates of return are considerably larger than empirical estimates of the real discount rate, which is about three percent (Gramlich, 1990). A Unit of the University of Oregon called “Into Careers” stated that, Internships are important for any career but for a medical degree, it is very important because you get hands on training as well as learning new things every day.
During medical school, you spend two years working as an intern in a hospital or clinic. As an intern, you rotate through internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics, oncology, and other hospital departments. It is just the same as residency. After graduating from medical school, students spend between three to seven years in a residency. This is paid on-the-job training where they get more in-depth exposure and experience working in the medical specialty they have chosen (univ. of Oregon). Next requirement is experience because you have to know what you’re doing before you perform any surgery on any human being.
It may require 2-4 years of surgery experience. You need to be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Surgery relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. You also perform a variety of tasks. After a surgery is completed or observed you will need to report to a medical director and a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. According to salary. com, a doctor’s hourly salary ranges from $117 to $223. A doctor’s weekly salary ranges from $4,687 to $8,904.
A doctor’s monthly salary ranges from $20,311 to $38,583 and a doctor’s yearly salary ranges from $242,738 to 463,000. Ashley Carter also stated that, “Being a nurse practitioner is not an easy responsibility. She said it is big a responsibility just like if you have children. You have to take care of them and provide for them in every way possible and we treat our patients as our own and we care for them like we would our children. If you think being a nurse is easy, try being an actual doctor or surgeon or physician. It’s not easy at all.
It takes time and patience. When ii comes to any career, it’s all about passion because you have to have the desire to go out and be successful. Marva Collins said, “Success doesn’t come to you, you go to it. ” Everything is not going to always be handed to you. You have to go out and get it. Bill Cosby spoke on the topic of success and said, “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is to try and please everyone. ” If a specific career you want to go for is something that your family or anyone else doesn’t think suits you, prove them wrong.
Success is not pleasing everyone but it is to please you. You don’t need certain people to obtain success and you don’t need people in your ear trying to change your mind on what you should do. Do what you have to do, day in and day out and you’ll get to the point of success. I believe success is what you make of it. You have to be independent to be successful. Not everybody is going to be a part of our success. If you didn’t need them then to get where you are now then you don’t need them there with you when you become successful.
