Personal Philosophy of Nursing

Nursing is a profession engaged in public service. This field plays a vital role in the quality of health care that people from all over the world are receiving. It involves taking care of the sick and providing medical aid as well as physical and moral support to those that need it (Dall, Chen & Seifert, Maddox, & Hogan, 2009). From my perspective, nursing is one of the most honorable professions that anyone can venture into. Nurses are the individuals who are educated and trained in order to take care of people who need medical assistance due to a specific kind of illness.

Thus, the job of a nurse is not only physically and mentally demanding, but it requires emotional strength as well, as dealing with sick people everyday will take its toll on a person. This field also requires extreme dedication, patience, and good communication skills. It is necessary to communicate well with patients and build trust in order to break the barriers that may hinder the improvement of their health. A patient who has built a fiduciary relationship with a nurse may be able to open up and tell the nurse everything that he or she is feeling, and this is important.

It is difficult to provide a general definition as to who a person is and what he or she is capable of because everyone is unique, and having a specific type of impression may lead to narrow-mindedness. Every individual is unpredictable, and one of the most important things to learn in life is that there are many surprises in store for everyone. The World Health Organization defines health as the state of completeness in terms of physical, emotional, social, and mental well-being. Health is not limited to the absence of any illness.

It also pertains to the holistic or the general condition of a person (World Health Organization [WHO], 2003). In relation to the field of nursing, health can be defined as freedom from any physical, mental, and psychological illness. The main role of nurses is to put premium and take care of the health of the patients. Hackneyed as this may sound, health is truly wealth because no amount of money can put a price on the perfect health of a person. An environment is the general area or surrounding that envelops a person.

It is not limited to a specific geographical area, but it also pertains to an individual’s feelings while working in it. In the field of nursing, the work environment can be easily defined as a medical environment, but when it comes to the atmosphere, it is very unpredictable and hard to define. Working with patients everyday makes the world of nurses a sensitive environment. Meeting sick individuals everyday is part of that challenge that comes with the profession. Hence, I believe that there is no other field that involves so much heart and soul like nursing.

Taking care of different strangers is a very hard thing to do, and doing it with grace and patience is much harder. The world will never be the same without these people who are constantly trying to make a difference in it, one day at a time. References Dall, T. , Chen, Y. , Seifert, R. , Maddox, P. & Hogan, P.
