Organizational performance management is important for all types of businesses, especially in the world of medicine. Three organizational businesses we chose as a team to research and compare Town Beach Fire and rescue, The Baptist Hospital, and The Center for Disease Control, and the roles that Pharmacists play in the dispensing, and managing of prescription medication. This paper will compare the main regulatory and accreditation standards that apply to each type of organization and identify standards that apply broadly to most or all types of health care organizations.

Discuss the influence of regulatory and accreditation standards on performance-management systems. Determine how the performance-management systems affect risk management and quality management in each type of organization. Identify key areas in the organization that will have direct responsibility for carrying out the everyday responsibilities associated with the regulations or standards. Describe oversight activities that could be practiced to ensure that the regulatory and accreditation requirements are being implemented and are achieving the desired results. Address the similarities and differences among the types of organizations.

Propose how each organization will monitor performance, achieve regulatory and accreditation compliance, and improve overall organizational performance. Describe ways each organization will communicate with leadership to ensure alignment of organizational goals and gain buy-in from staff to achieve compliance with the standards and requirements issued by regulatory and accreditation bodies. Identify compliance with the regulations and development of risk-management and quality-management systems for each type of organization contribute to the organization management system.

As a team we chose the town of Palm Beach Fire Rescue, The Baptist Hospital, The Center for Disease Control (CDC), and Pharmacology. The similarities for Palm Beach Fire Rescue, the CDC, and Pharmacology are that they provide and promote health to the public. Palm Beach Fire Rescue provides emergency response to life threatening situations, hazardous materials, and ocean rescue. The CDC detects and investigates health problems, while conducting research to enhance prevention. While implement prevention strategies, promote healthy behaviors, foster safe and healthful environments and provide leadership and training.

Pharmacology provides safety by being up-to-date with medication measurements, medical interactions, medicine allergies of the patient, and answering questions about over-the-counter medication. The town beach fire and rescue’s main governing body associated with our department is based out of the National Fire Protection Agency 1500 which deals with firefighter safety. The department has standard operating guidelines categorized into 500 numerical series IE; (SOP 512 Roof Operations) these procedures are based from the NFPA guidelines and incorporated into our department.

Every employee must meet specific state requirements as well as the NFPA minimum standard certification prior to being employed and acting in the position as firefighter. All EMTs and Paramedics must pass required courses and state examination in order to be license to work in the state. Continuing education as well as refresher courses must be maintained. The Town of Palm Beach’s regulations and accreditations that the Fire Department has to follow allows for the upmost in professional and quality service to the residents of the town.

It also provides for personal that professionally trained The performance management system within our organization consists of everything from policies and procedures to training and education The Human resources department along with the operations division in the department take an active approach in creating a standard evaluation system. The training division’s role in the fire department deals primarily with creating policies and procedures as well as provide for education and additional training as needed. Dispatch center provides the guidelines for our communications procedure as well as any related communications issue.

Baptist Hospital provides and extensive range of medical, surgical and technological services. Some of these includes weight-loss surgery, robotic surgery, pediatrics, a Baptist Center for Spine Care which diagnose and administer treatment for back and neck problems, a Neuroscience Center. The Baptist Children’s Hospital is also a part of this facility and offers a 24 hour Children Emergency Center, neonatal intensive care and children cancer treatment; Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute which is internationally renowned for cardiovascular treatment and research.

There are various governing guidelines, and rules are being followed. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is an independent, not-for-profit organization that recognizes quality and standards within an organization. The National Institute for Care Reform (NIHCR) conducts high quality, and delivery of health. Florida requires a Code 15 Report to be completed to the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). OHSA Occupational Safety and Health Administration require healthcare organizations to have an Exposure Control Plan to prevent HIV, HBV, and HCV.

The Baptist Hospital is one of the most respected centers in Florida. The regulations and accreditation requirements have resulted in many awards achievements. It’s accredited for over a number of years for quality services. Some examples of accreditation include heart and stroke programs from Society of Chest Pain Centers and in 1996 it received the Governors Sterling Award for total quality management. In 1998 Baptist was recognized as a Magnet hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nursing Credentialing Center.

Performance management at Baptist Hospital helps with the improvement of patient’s management. In an effort to improve patient safety, the hospital is working with the Baptist Health South Florida, (BHSF) Patient Safety Leadership Group. Failure Mode Effects Analysis helps prevents errors for hospital. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, (HIPAA) establishes standards for the privacy of individual Identifiable Health Information for the protection of certain health information. It protects health insurance coverage when jobs are changed.

HIPAA also protects the patients’ personal Medical records. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is supporting the implementation of a national voluntary accreditation program for local, state, territorial, and tribal health departments. The new Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB), a nonprofit 501© 3 entity, has been established to serve as the independent accrediting body.

PHAB led the development and testing activities, with significant participation from local, tribal, state and national leaders and launched the national accreditation program September 14, 2011. There are different agencies that regulate and govern Pharmacy. Each state has a Board of Pharmacy that regulates licensing for Pharmacists and Pharmacists Technicians, set state laws and regulations and operating guidelines. There is also the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) that is a government agency that enforces controlled substances and issues a DEA number. There are other regulations and laws that apply.

In the state of Indiana a Pharmacist must have the following accreditations are needed to practice, one must pass the Indiana’s Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE), must have certification in Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC), must take the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), and must have 1500 hours to practice. Each state varies as to what is needed to be practicing Pharmacists. Healthcare organizations all have one goal of quality care for all patients, but each has unique methods of reaching and sustaining that goal of quality patient care.

Emergency Medical Services, a Pharmacist, or managed care organizations, each organization has unique regulatory standards each must meet. Each has unique performance management systems in place to monitor and communicate compliance to quality outcomes and risk management standards. These organizations primary goal is to keep medical costs down by being a one stop shop for a patient’s health care needs. All of these organizations strive for patient safety and quality patient care, though each may see a patient during a different part of treatment. Pharmacies focus on medication.

EMS focuses on emergent treatment, fast, and safe transport to a hospital for treatment. All of these organizations are regulated by state and federal governing bodies. In conclusion the four health care organizations chose by team A are Palm Beach Fire Rescue, The Baptist Hospital, The Center for Disease Control (CDC), and Pharmacology. These four health care organizations have services that provide and promote health to the public. Some of these services may include responding to emergency situations, and some of their services include researching and protecting the public by making laws to protect the public from illness.

All of these health care organizations have a governing body, communication channels, and different guidelines to how their company or services are used, and governed. The organizational performance of the Palm Beach Fire Rescue, The Baptist Hospital, and The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Pharmacology depend on how these health organizations carry out their avenues of communication, follow procedures, and treat patients.
