Also, as in males and the field of nursing, the society has remained silent on this matter of lopsided hiring trends in detective work. Civil society organizations have not shown any commitment in coming out to speak on behalf of these females who are not given proper representation in the work of detectives. The numbers are vivid and available for society to see and yet no one is speaking. The governments of the nations of the world are equally silent on this issue and the required affirmative action that can lead to significant rises in the numbers of female detectives is nowhere.
Another possible reason for this discrimination of females in this field that is full of men is the general fear that is held by women concerning the work itself. The personal perception of women as weak and therefore unable to tackle some challenging and sometimes physically taxing tasks scares then away from the idea of taking up jobs as detectives. They have learnt to consider hazardous duties as masculine and therefore detective work with all its risks is supposed to be left to males, according to these fearful females.
Given this kind of mentality held by females themselves, society goes a head to not only reduce the number of women who handle the work of detectives but also treat female detectives in a despicable manner. It is worthy noting that female detectives can operate as good as male detectives (Police Foundation). Like in males and the field of nursing, the field of detectives is full of males who have made spectacular and heroic achievements in the line of duty.
The police departments in the nations of the world are full of long lists of male detectives who have assisted in the arresting of the dangerous serial killer, the drug dealer, the paedophile, the mobster, the illegal gambler, the cattle rustler, the coup plotter, the rapist, the arsonist or the smuggler. An attempt to get a name of a lady will yield few names if any. What this means is that the females whose dreams are to play a role in detective work have no one before them with a profile big enough to inspire them.
What this leads to is the reduction in the numbers of females with enough motivation to join the forces and the result of a small number of females in detective work is of course serious discrimination and disregard. The same discrimination also comes up in times of hiring where the hiring officers have the formed opinion that women have not made any achievement in detective work and therefore cannot make any serious moves while at work. This result to few or no females hired to the field of detectives (Wilcox, 1996).
