Using it through smoking is also possible, but it will take longer time compared to heroin injection. Heroin injection is still the leading method of heroin use among users that are seeking for treatment.

However, new reports have identified sniffing and smoking as the most widely spread method of heroin use in New York and Chicago. According to NIDA’s Monitoring the Future Survey, the usage of heroin among the 8th, 10th, and 12th grade remain constant from 2003- 2004.

In addition, NIDA’s Community Epidemiology Work Group reported in its December 2003 publication that heroin was the most used drug in many drug admission treatment facilities in New York, Boston, Detroit, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
