I. Millions of americans suffer from heart disease.
II. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women III. About 600,000 people die of heart disease each year in the United States.

Thesis Statement: Heart disease is a huge issue in the United States and being aware of symptoms can help save lives.

Body

I. Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common type in the United States is coronary artery disease.

A. Coronary artery disease occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This plaque consists of cholesterol deposits. B. The most common form of coronary artery disease is called angina. C. A few symptoms are; chest pain and discomfort. This is because blood is having a difficult time reaching the heart. If left untreated it can result in a heart attack.

II. Other cardiovascular diseases include:

A. Abnormal heart rhythms
B. Heart Failure
C. Heart valve disease
D. Heart muscle disease
E. Vascular disease

III. There are some ways to help reduce the risk for developing heart disease.

A. Quit smoking. People who smoke run more than twice the risk for a heart
attack. B. Improve cholesterol levels. A diet low in cholesterol and saturated fats will reduce the risk. C. Control high blood pressure. Over 50 million people have high blood pressure. There are numerous medications to help get it under control. D. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight greatly increases the risks. It puts more stress on the heart. E. Control diabetes. Diabetes can lead to major heart issues including heart attack.
