Mission: “To provide quality health care in a culturally sensitive manner. Vision: “To design and implement a quality, community-based primary care system with an emphasis on intervention and prevention. A system which is caring, compassionate and competent focusing on the needs of our culturally diverse community as well as ways to continually improve and expand our service. The mission is used every minute and every day at my site. They have a routine when checking patients in, getting them ready when it’s their time to see the doctors etc. The doctor’s deal with patient and their needs different hit the “sensitive manner”.
This hospital is made for the community to use in case of emergency. They have a rule they have to go by, like people can’t be waiting for so long, everyone has to helped and treated with respect there has been times when patients felt like they were being treated wrong. Human resources were called and came down to investigate the situation. Everyone seems to leave happy, and all questions have been answers. Since the hospital has gotten less money, the eye clinic can’t provide glasses. So they have made relationship with another place that makes glasses and will help the patient receive them for a low price.
All the patient has to do is provide a prescription which the doctor has giving to them. My short term goal is to learn why some people can’t see out if there peripheral. Physical Space My site is a standard size to me; there are a lot of rooms and a lot of hallway space. For example the lobby is big as classroom and a little more. The front desk is equal to putting 8 6’2 men their comfortably. The rooms were the nurses take vital signs are standard room size, same as the visit rooms and there are 6 of those. The copy rooms, and break room, are all also standard size. The 2 bathrooms are equivalent to 1 stall at school with a sink etc.
The medicine room is equal to a closest. Lastly the doctor’s room is a little smaller than a standard room. Instrumentation and Technology The nurses tend to use the proctor which allows them to read and measure the patient’s vision. Technicians, Nurses, and Physicians all use the autorefractor which is used to give an estimated prescription of the eye. Doctor’s us the slit lamp, which examines the patient’s eye from all aspects (front, back, side etc. ) they also use a special lens to look deeper in the eye. Anybody is able to use the topographer, which takes a picture of the surface of the eye to measure the actual curve of the eye.
The Visual Field is used be technicians and it measures the area from where you are able to see visual signals, when your eyes are in a standing position and looking straight ahead. This is usually has something to do with peripheral which is the damage of nerves. Those patients usually have glaucoma and are treated often. The A/B machine can be used by anyone. B scan is made to measure an ultrasound of a patient’s eye to determine any rips or detachments. A scan is used for the determination of the size of eye, to determine the ocular. Pachymeter is made to measure thickness of the corona, mostly used on patients with glaucoma.
OCT machine Optical Coherence Tomography is made to take images of the back of the eye and the optomic nerve many used on glaucoma and diabetic patients. A/B Scan Machine Slit Lamp Autorefractor OCT machine Pachymeter Site Careers Rene, is C. O. A Certified Ophthalmic Assistant and he is as well a Technician, he performs all pre diagnostic testing pier to seeing Ophthalmologist. Marsha and Benny are also Technicians they all direct diagnostic tests, provide instruction on contact lenses, control’s eye medicine and maintains visual instruments. Doctor Cox and Doctor Casey are Ophthalmologist, licensed physician and surgeon.
They observe and maintain the health of their patient’s eye, everything that has to do with the eye. For example, the doctors are required to know how to give glasses, contacts, plastic surgery, and surgery in general etc. Doctor Chung is an Optometrist she is mostly an eye doctor just for glasses. Nurse Cumer is a CNA Certified Nurse Assistant; her occupation is to treat new patients. Collecting vital signs, pull previse notes and charts arranging the patient for the doctor. She also arranges to drop and pick up medicines from the pharmacy when needed.
Maria is an LVN Licensed Vocational Nurse, she is a surgical coordinator. Making doctors surgery appointment’s, preparing patients before they go into surgery. Making sure patients insurance goes through, she too arranges patients before seeing the doctor. Ms. Winter is a RN Registered Nurse, she is needed to help the patient in the best way she can, give advice and help coordinate other health services for patients. She is in charge of interns, techs, and volunteers. Event A typical patient that comes to the eye clinic comes to the front desk to the assistants.
From their they are in the process of being checked in, the process consist of pulling up all their history within the site and making sure their insurance is still valid. The assistant then places it on the counter so one of the CAN’s can look at it and pull up the “yellow’s” which is the doctor’s notes. After that they will be called by one of the CAN’s to get vital signs checked, height, blood pressure etc. Between the 3 technicians they take the patient to the doctors room and dilates their eyes and then uses the tenoped, or the visual field to measures the patients view and compare it to the last time they were there.
They make notes to the doctor of things they think are important and need to be checked on top of whatever the patient came in for. The doctor later comes in, and he/she uses the slit lamp to re look at the eye from all aspects. The patient then asks any questions and he/she is free to go home and their next appointment will be mailed to them. Site Assessment The eye clinic very much so respects King Drew student in this program and they understand why students are there in the first place and not to help them with extra work. Sometimes that is fine, but my site knows I’m there to get a one on one medical experience.
So they weekly try to quiz me on terms, equipment, and how to do different procedure’s etc. Basically keeping you interested into the field which I appreciate. For example my first day, I was able to see a laser surgery. My site was very welcoming and opening to new people. They treat me with respect as if I were a real employee. It has been a beautiful learning experience, how to react with different codes, and everyday hospital protocol. This site has taught me that working in a hospital is nonstop job; somebody will always need your help. Personally working in the hospital might not work for me; somewhere would be nice for me.
I love my site a lot, they treat me like a family and very welcoming. My site has taught me that team work sometimes is the best work, you can’t do everything by yourself. Personal Statement My overall experience on my site is I love it. I have matured from it; my co-workers have taught me how to be professional and how to communicate with patients on a higher level. Also how to talk to doctors and review notes. I have learned that I can work better with a team, and I am not shy to talk to strangers and how to pronounce unfamiliar words. I have learn how the human eye is set up, how many layers there is, how you are able to see etc.
