Erectile dysfunction is a problem that is not openly discussed by men probably because it is a degradation of their tough image and manhood. It is not a very uncommon problem, in fact, many men suffer from it. Men should not be ashamed to confront such problems because it is a medical condition and not a sexual performance problem. It is caused by a variety of factors but this condition that can be cured when given proper medical attention.
Men are usually known to be a rowdy bunch but suffering from such a medical disorder takes a lot out of them. It is a major dilemma for the part of a man as he begins to disassociate himself from the society. He feels left out because he has lost a basic function of being a human. With the condition, he has the essence of being a man making him useless to the opposite sex. There is also a fear of being ridiculed when his condition reaches the ears of his peers, co-workers or even his partner.
The problem however should be faced head on because it is curable most of the time. II. What is Erectile Dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction is often labeled as “impotence” and experts object such a labeling because of certain negative entailments and the absence of a definite meaning, thus, it is being referred to as erectile dysfunction. It is defined as the “inability to achieve or maintain an erection” even with sexual stimulation (American Medical Association, 2006).
This medical condition is classified into four levels, namely, “(1) A total inability to achieve erection, (2) the occasional ability to achieve erection, (3) an inability to maintain erections, and (4) the ability to achieve erection, but inability to control ejaculation”. Prior to what most believe, erectile dysfunction is not directly caused by aging. An erection is dependent on certain factors such as male hormones or testosterone, nerves, blood vessels, muscles and fibrous tissues (American Medical Association, 2006).
