The client suffers from a major depression. He has an Italian background. He is a university student and has a girlfriend. He seemed to have got a long-term type of stress from the people around him. The mother is the dominating-type in the family and his father is submissive to the demands of the mother. The mother is manipulative and gets irritable when her demands were not given. The client seems to have been suppressed because even to his extended family, he feels obliged to do certain things like attend to family dinners.
His girlfriend is also demanding so the client not only feels like he is bound by rules and demands at home, but, also outside his house. The client seems to have been suppressed because he can’t speak up to these people. He doesn’t want to submit to the demands of the people around him, but would only keep it to himself. In effect, the client has been stressed which resulted to major depression. Depression could make one person irritable and withdrawn. The client suffers from major depression which is also called unipolar depression.
Major depression is a persistent type of mental health illness and may interfere to one’s thoughts from time to time. As a result, major depression can be very dangerous. Symptoms of Major Depression evident on the client The client always feels the pressure because of being the eldest child. This is typical of people who have major depression. They feel guilty and sad. They also think that they are helpless and without worth. It is also typical for those who have major depression to become obsessive-compulsive.
It is their way of releasing whatever suppresses them. In the case of the client, he has started to become obsessive-compulsive in his eating habits and even in his daily exercise routine. He would hesitate to eat bad food and look for the calories of every food he is going to take. He would also do regular runs and would feel guilty if he fails to do so. In addition to that, he has also become short-tempered and would be involved in big fights with his family.
He also doesn’t have sex drive. He also easily feels tired. These are symptoms of having a major depression: change in appetite, the feeling of guilt or as a failure, temperamental, difficulty in sleeping (so the client easily gets tired and has bad appearance), and not enjoying what he does before. Causes of Major Depression According to National Alliance on Mental Illness (2006), the cause of major depression is not only psychological, but can be environmental and biological as well.
One of the cause of major depression has been found to be associated with the imbalances among the neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine). In addition to that, scientists also associate major depression to genetics. It may be possible that major depression already runs in the family. In the case of the client, this may be possible since even his grandparents are like his mother who has been very demanding. Maybe, the mother had also suffered from depression.
