Science used to be thought of only in terms of its contributions to medical science. It was there to cure disease or help us understand our past as human beings. Over time though, science has left the medical field and has begun to spin off into fields that directly relate to our everyday life such as agriculture and technology. So yes, I will agree that it is valuable for the citizens of a nation to at least have a basic understanding of how science works and how it relates to our daily activities.
Looking around us, we may not realize that science has something to do with everything that we see, touch and feel. But the truth is that the soda that quenches our thirst and cools us off on those hot summer days is the product of painstaking scientific research into the taste buds of man. The clothes we wear is the culmination of a scientific experiment tat combined various fibers in order to come up with the cloth we now wear. The soap that cleans our body and helps us to stay sweet smelling is the product of science.
That vitamin pill we take for granted but helps our body to fend off disease is the product of science. Obviously, science has found its way into every aspect of our daily lives. And yet, people have almost no understanding as to how science works to make everything we enjoy a reality. Over the past 2 decades, science has developed into a field that knows no bounds and the only limit to its application in our daily lives depends upon the lack of imagination in mankind.
The need to insure that mankind is well versed and is capable of understanding science has become even more pronounced at the end of the 20th century and here as we stand at the beginning of the 21st century. New diseases are discovered everyday, computers get smarter by the minute, and the environment we live in continues to enter crazy patterns with each passing day. These are only but a few reasons as to why it is imperative that mankind become well versed in the area of science. The future survival of mankind depends on it.
