Cosmetic Surgery – a blessing or a curse?

When you have a look at the women on the streets, and it is so hard to find no one with heavy make-up; when you are watching through the newspaper, and you will never stop to see large number of advertisements on cosmetics surgery, none of them focus on natural beauty. As we all know, chasing beauty is the natural instinct of women, and the advancement in technology allows the women to have a different change in their appearance through cosmetic surgery. However, I am convinced that value of beauty has gone badly wrong. First and foremost, the problems brought by cosmetic surgeries would be disastrous to our society.

If the trend of cosmetic surgery has become more prevalent, everyone, irrespective of the fact that they aren’t ugly, will still undergo cosmetic surgery in order to have their perfect face. In the end, every men and women will look like the same, with round eyes, a straight nose, oval face and flawless skin. Isn’t it too terrible to find lots of “me” in the streets? Furthermore, society judges beauty wrongly, even though society has always valued beauty, There are still a twisted value of beauty, which is utterly focusing on appearance.

Research by Honigman, Phillips and Castle supports that Since most people, after undergoing surgeries, will look pretty and attractive, those who have not undergo such surgery would be judge by the others ,treat them as not beautiful enough. Those people being despised somehow will have cosmetic surgery. It will cause a vicious cycle at all. Moreover, beauty cannot be artificial. Such cosmetic surgery phenomenon is obviously twisting value to our society as our citizens are increasingly judging others only by their appearance, meanwhile ignoring inner beauty in them.

Also, cosmetic surgery cost extremely high, not to mention the possible side-effects and risk brought by cosmetic surgery may have on our physical bodies and mental health. An inevitable part of cosmetic surgery is making holes and cut off the skins, and that will leave you a lifelong scar. It is an ironic fact for cosmetic surgery which promote beauty. Then, when the skins is cut, internal tissues and body cell will expose to unclean matter, and there is a chance that our body will be infected with bacteria.

More seriously, it will cause your death. Moreover, the outcome are never guaranteed, and surgeries sometimes don’t go as planned. For example, a breast augmentation might leave you feeling too large or not large enough than expectation. This may need more cosmetic surgeries to fix the problems. Then, you will keep undergoing cosmetic surgeries one by one. Most importantly, cosmetic surgeries are high risk. A simple mistake will have already become a surgery failure. Take a famous case Jocelyn Wildenstein as an example, she failed her surgery once.

Doctor remediation are all useless, and doctor assessment would not allow her to undergo one more surgery. Therefore, she has to live a whole life with a monster face. I would say this is a life gambling. However, cosmetic surgery is not bad at all. Cosmetic surgery can benefit some types of people. In fact, every of us aren’t flawless. Someone may have large area of freckle on their face; someone may have inborn cleft lip . It seems just little thing, but these flaws may cause mocked by the others. Cosmetic surgery also helps those with inborn flaw and those who have different types of accidents.

For example, it allows a baby with cleft lip to drink normally; and its helps someone reconstruct skin who get burnt in a fire accident. From above, it seems that cosmetic surgery really benefits in medical function. At this moment, cosmetic surgery has already shifted from the superficial matter of becoming beauty to the matter of whether one can bring back a normal life. However, someone would say that they undergo cosmetic surgery for different reasons, such as: gain confidence in themselves, employment opportunities, and our interpersonal relationship.

I think they are just having a wrong way, which is cosmetic surgery to achieve different goals. Someone’s sense of self, including confidence, should not depend on their appearance. Because appearance are not the most important thing. Being a capable person, having a good personality, developing working ability would be the key to boost confidence, improve interpersonal relationship and ensure job security. That means it is impossible to buy sense of self. Last but not least, what can we do to reduce this kind of misuse of cosmetic surgery?

Media actually influences a lot. Advertisements on TV or on newspaper make us believe physical attractive beauty is very important in everywhere. However, value of beauty always change from Ancient China to modern society. Fat equals to beauty in Tang Dynasty, so we called Yang Guifei as a beauty at that time, but we will only call Yang Guifei as a fat women now. According to Kahlil Gibran, beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart. We cannot undergo cosmetic surgery to change our face each time when value of beauty changed.

The outer beauty looked with eyes doesn’t last forever. Therefore, I think everyone should not put appearance as top priority. They better build up their own style, like dressing, without caring how people judge them. Because you are just being your own. Finally, I think cosmetic surgery is not acceptable to me. But only when the condition that appearance had seriously affected his daily life, it is acceptable to me to have cosmetic surgery. Undergoing cosmetic surgery for the pursuit of beauty is undesirable because it is harmful to our body.

Health is the most important thing in our life. We better put health as top priority. We should know that appearances can be deceptive. No one will have a perfect appearance, so they should not focus on simple appearance, but concentrate on our personalities of being capable, good person. We should all be proud of ourselves because everyone in the world is unique. We should not live for following others step, like copying pop star style. Lastly, I think everyone should keep these words in mind that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.
