The editor has suggested that you contrast the North West and South West of England. She has asked for your report to include:

1. A description of ways in which the health of the public is monitored and provide an overview of the main patterns of health in the UK as a whole, and select examples that are particularly relevant to the two regions selected for the newspaper article.

2. An explanation of the main factors that influence patterns of health in different parts of the UK, focusing particularly on those found in the selected regions. You should also discuss the factors likely to influence current and future patterns of health in the UK.

3. The newspaper report should consider socio-economic, environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors and consider issues relating to these in some detail. And the editor asks you to evaluate the influence of government on these factors.

Task A
Describe current patterns of ill- health and how they are monitored. (P3)

Look at examples of public health reports both regional and national), which will give you the necessary public health information. You will give you the necessary public health information. You will probably find these on the Department of Health website, National Statistics Online and regional government offices. Describe the purpose of public health reports, the role of the organisations that may be used both nationally and locally.

This will provide evidence for P3.

booklet or PowerPoint presentation with notes Task C
Discuss the factors likely to influence current and future patterns of health in the UK. (M2)

Discuss each factor so that you explain the way in which it influences the pattern of health, the number of people involved and possible ways in which the influence of the factor could be managed to encourage better health. Try to support your comments with relevant statistics, remembering to acknowledge the sources of these by keeping a record of the website link and the date it was accessed. You can list these in a reference list at the end of your article. Find data which shows predicted patterns of health over the future 2-3 decades and again discuss the predicted trends. This will provide evidence for M2 . The evidence you need to submit could be in the form of an essay, table, booklet or PowerPoint presentation with notes. Task D

Evaluate the influence of government on factors that contribute to the current patterns of health AND illness in the UK. (D1).

You will first need to identify the ways in which government is influencing patterns in health and illness and illness and then make judgements, supported by evidence e.g. from statistical data, of how effective government and its policies have been in reducing ill-health and encouraging better health. Select 2-3 examples and explore these in depth so you can judge the extent to which government policies are or are not effective in reducing ill health. You should also make a reasoned judgement about other ways in which public health in the UK could be improved. This will provide evidence for D1
