Apart from directly dealing with patients medical microbiologists are involved in teaching and research, which has proven vital to medical doctors. Clinical Chemistry This is an area of pathology dealing with bodily fluids.

Focuses on laboratory analysis, tests and studies related to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Basic areas of testing include the endocrine system, the immune system and the testing for drugs (toxicology). Transfusion Science Focuses on supporting hospital blood banks and blood transfusion services, for example ensuring blood groups of both donors and patients are compatible.

Haematology Focuses on the morphology and physiology of blood. Histopathology Focuses on the study and analysis of tissue samples using specialist techniques.
