Statement of purpose

As accumulating abundant experience through my internship in National Health Research Institute (NHRI), and a member in infectious disease research lab in Kaohsiung Medical School, it expands my understanding upon many kinds of microorganism. Baby sitting with MDCK cell when pilot producing influenza vaccine, HaCaT cell for a model mimicing the infection of Propionibacterium acnes on human skin, the time when I get along with all the micro babies. As a pharmacist in Taiwan, I already got a lot of knowledge in the pharmacy field, such as the structure of a drug, the ADME of a drug in human body, but I am not satisfy with that.

I am especially curious about the metabolism of a drug in human’s body, about all the acting enzymes, the cellular interaction after the administration of a single drug. After browsing so many graduate programs in the United States, I desire UW’s department of pharmaceutics the most, I think ?????????????????? We I still have From producing influenza in cell culture to the study of the inhibition in Propionibacterium acnes, I found I like the time when I get along with all the micro babies.

Being the third year to study in Kaohsiung Medical University& internship experience in NHRI, Taiwan, I have had a great deal of laboratory experience in pharmacy, chemistry, and biology. In the lab, I have performed cell culture and I am currently using fluoresce staining to assay live/dead cells (as now a member in KMU’s professor’s lab). 1. Course: pharmacology, biochemistry, 2. Internship: I had a summer internship at National Health Research Institute (NHRI), Vaccine and Infectious Disease Center.

The best institution in the field of health care in Taiwan, the research institution includes cancer center, drug development center, medical material center, and so on. That is the time when I just finish my sophomore year in Kaohsiung Medical School (KMU), with high pressure in the pharmacy curriculum, which we were educated with all the associated knowledge we need to become a professional pharmacist in Taiwan, such as medical botany, pharmaceutics, analyze chemistry. That is, we seldom has chance to study paper, facing with real research environment. As a newborn researcher.

The center I join had a close relationship with the vaccine factory in NHRI, the major goal for the vaccine center (us? ) was to develop a diversity of knowledge which can be use in large scale production, from adjuvant choosing to the culture condition… The focus for my internship was on production of influenza vaccines by using cell culture. The first two to three weeks, I can only watch the research assistance there to do all the experiments. However, the most challenging task I got from my PI (Project Investigator) was to understand and present three associated papers within a week.

At that time, I had only finish my second year in the faculty of Pharmacy in Kaohsiung Medical School, as a faculty with heavy pressure in all kinds of pharmacy curriculum, we seldom have chance to study paper, don’t even say present a seminar for paper review. Nowadays Taiwan’s influenza vaccine production was done by embryo egg, however, this method concerned such as allergy, infected problem. (When the avian flu outbreak, the supply of healthy chicken’s eggs may be in trouble) By using method Our PI’s project, was to ?????? paper ????

??????????? I finished a project by myself and got fourth place in the 2013 summer interns’ projects competition. I am seeking to complement this experience with a research internship in order to acquire the background necessary for a future career in pharmacy internship & research 3. Lab experience As accumulating abundant experience through my internship in National Health Research Institute (NHRI), and a member in infectious disease research lab in Kaohsiung Medical School, it expands my understanding upon many kinds of microorganism.

It triggered my desire to do more research on microorganism when “Baby sitting” the MDCK cell during the time I involve in pilot producing influenza vaccine, HaCaT cell for a model mimicking the infection of Propionibacterium acnes on human skin. As a pharmacist in Taiwan, I already equipped with sufficient knowledge in the pharmacy field, such as the structure of a drug, the ADME of a drug in human body, but I would like take a step further to expand my potential.

I am especially curious about the metabolism of a drug in human’s body, about all the acting enzymes, the cellular interaction after the administration of a single drug. After reviewing many top graduate programs in United States, I consider the Ph. D. program in the department of pharmaceutics at University of Washington was the most suitable place to me, not only with similar lab experience, but the related researches that Prof. XX and Prof. OO are doing. ?????????????????? We I still have.
