Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post traumatic stress disorder is a disorder that occur due to anxiety as a result of exposure to any terrifying or shocking event(s). Post trauma stress disorder is a continues, ongoing and severe emotional reaction of a severe psychological or mental stress or trauma. Although the Post traumatic Stress Disorder has been prevailing in human being since they are facing various kinds of trauma but it was formally recognized as psychological disorder in 1980 but was referred with different names e. g. gross stress reaction, combat fatigue etc

The normal traumatic stress is short term and transitory in nature , and is hence less harmful and is less intense as compared to the post traumatic stress disorder, which far more long-lasting in nature and is more harmful for the patient and hence does take a lot of time for him to be recovered from this disorder. Post traumatic stress disorder can occur as a result of many possible events/occurrences. The first of which includes death of someone close to the patient, life threat to the patient or anyone who is very close to him(life threat may have medical reasons or accidental), threat to the integrity of the patient etc.

Besides these things, which physically affects or threatens the patient, there are some other reasons too for this kind of order which include any other psychological trauma. Post traumatic Stress Disorder usually happens to the people who have been recovered from disastrous events like earthquake, torture, war, airplane crash and most recently for the most happening events ‘terrorist attacks’. Rescue workers can also be the victims of such disorder by experiencing an event which has very disastrous effects with mass causalities.

However if not treated appropriately within time , the disorder can result in various effects such as detachment from family and society, broken relationships , being desperate etc. SYMPTOMS The symptoms given below are not necessary to be consistent with the patient i. e. at the time of stress the no of symptoms and its intensity may increase and at the time of relaxation it may decrease. This means that the symptoms are to be analyzed and evaluated over a period of time so that good identification of the disorder, its affects and intensity can be measured.

The symptoms of Post traumatic Stress Disorder normally begins with in three to six months of the causing event but in some cases they are also observed to come within a time period of one year or so . Occurrence of a similar event can also trigger the symptoms of this disorder to arise e. g. there a person who has been in Post traumatic Stress Disorder because of an airplane accident. And the person looks to a video of a recent accident of an airplane may trigger the Post traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms in the patient and his disorder may then start to develop.

Hence the disorder may occur due to the same event within the time of 1 year or so , or due to the occurrence of any similar event . However th symptoms of the Post traumic Stress Disorder includes: • Feeling things that have no reality (hearing a sound that is not there in actual). • Being angry or irritating and hence deteriorating the relationships. • Feeling desperate about life and future and feeling emotionally dead. • Having problems in sleeping, having problems in memory. • Problems in concentrating on something (e. g. work or studies etc).

• Being easily frightened, being self destructing and not enjoying the activities • Feeling ashamed or guilty and hence being less confident. • Feeling detached and being frightened with the thoughts of the event. OTHER COMPLICATIONS Post traumatic stress disorder can cause a complete disorder in the prospects life from disrupted relationships to inability to work at all. However other mental problems that can also occur as a result being a victim of post traumatic stress disorder includes depression, disorder in eating habits, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, suicidal thoughts and actions etc.

The causes of this disorder can include any kind of sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse, threat to the life of the prospect or to any person close to him/her, exposure to any accident, exposure to fierce incidents like wars, …
